Who I am

Jeremy bio picMy name is Jeremy Geiger, and I’m the founder of Mindful Product Management. I’ve spent 25 years in the tech industry working for companies ranging from tiny startups to some of the world’s largest software companies and brands.

Through this journey, I’ve realized that my happiest, most fulfilling work days have been spent collaborating with smart people and in the service of others to help them succeed. It has also led me to understand the importance of staying true to myself, constantly learning, and seeking mindful equanimity at home and work.

To put it another way, the ups and downs of those years have led me to a singular mission in life:

I am here to help others through empathy and compassion.

Whether you are just starting on your product management journey or have been at it a while and need a fresh perspective, my purpose is to help you find what you need to create the journeys you’re looking for and to help you preserve your humanity in the process.

Managing and leading groups of product managers, technical writers, and engineers has not always been easy, nor was I perfect at it. But in the spirit of learning by doing, I found that if you are consistently showing up for your people as one human to another, you can accomplish amazing things without being sucked into a game of corporate competitiveness.

That is my approach to my work with clients. I show up as a flawed but experienced human being, ready to assist and provide guidance wherever it’s needed.

My Journey with Mindfulness and Meditation

I’ve been a mindfulness practitioner and meditator in various forms for a very long time. Still, I was not serious about it as a regular practice until about seven years ago.

I began meditating in earnest during a tough period in my career when the organization I was in was especially dysfunctional. I needed a way to cope with the mountain of daily political battles, endless corporate budget shell games, and what I eventually came to call a “Project Runway” culture. (Yes, back in the day, I watched Project Runway pretty consistently – if you’re not familiar, in the show, Heidi Klum was famous for pointedly saying, “Because one day you’re in, and the next day? You’re out.”)

And getting to the point:

That culture sucks.

Meanwhile, in my non-work life, My partner April, who is now a certified meditation teacher, was already well along on her journey into a mindful meditation practice. She introduced me to basic techniques of breath work to reduce stress and anxiety. I also started seeking mindfulness techniques through online resources and apps (Calm, Headspace, and the like).

Over time, and with her encouragement, I attended workshops and special meditation events. My enjoyment and engagement grew into attending a regular group session, which has become my most important appointment of the week. After that, I began attending multi-day retreats to go deeper.

The short version is…It worked.

But it was not a miraculous change that came overnight. It was, and is, a continuous practice to seek equanimity in all my interactions with others and, frankly, myself. I’ll document some of my experience here and via my newsletter, but that’s a story for another day.

Today, I continue to build my practice by formally studying Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, participating in retreats, and with my sangha.

This year, I have embarked on an immersion training program to work on the deeper things in my life that I want to address, and as a more extensive teacher training program to become certified to teach meditation to others.

I like to Make things

I’m also on a constant quest to learn as many things as possible in all sorts of disciplines. I have worked in many areas of commercial and residential construction (from bricklayer’s laborer to professional cabinetmaker).

I have worked as a professional picture framer, an illustrator and calligrapher, an IT/network administrator, a software developer, running a retail cash register, and much more. I’m also an amateur singer/songwriter, visual artist, and writer. My aspiration in life is to consider myself a polymath eventually.

This aspiration is, by nature, a work in continual progress.

As a recent example, I’ve been honing my abilities over the last decade in the art and craft of pizza making. I regularly make pizza in the wood-fired oven I built in my backyard. Building the oven was the confluence of all of the jobs I had in construction in my teens and twenties and was a profoundly personal experience for me as I worked through mourning the loss of my father.
And while attempting to perfect the pizza craft, I’ve learned one essential thing:

The pizza always tastes better when we have friends over to share it.

I think that also informs my approach to my work.

People You should know

Working so closely with PMs and prospective PMs uncovers many needs that can be best met by people who specialize in skills that require professional guidance. When you are talking about making happier people, we all have our own paths and baggage that informs both who we are and where we believe we can go. Sometimes, my clients uncover needs that I cannot fill.

In other words, I am not a therapist.

But I know a few good ones.

Beyond their trades and professions, these are good humans and organizations I love working with and highly recommend.
